Mahseer Magic
The undisputed king of the game fishes in India is the Mahseer. A large, powerful fish, it is the largest member of the Cypriniformes family in the world. Literally translated, Mahseer means 'Great Head', a suitable name for the muscled creature known to be the toughest fighter amongst fresh water fish.
Sadly, even the anglers do not know much about the fish. The efforts of the government are feeble in trying to save this mighty creature and in certain areas, where it was once abundant; it has been wiped out due to poaching and over fishing for commercial purposes.
However, all is not lost due to the efforts of certain individuals and angling associations such as the Himachal Angling Association, the mahseer is making a comeback in certain places and are still luring anglers to test the limits of their tackle.
